77 DEATH OF A NIGHTINGALE – NEW WEBSITE NOW LIVE – the cold douche of “virtual reality” in SEN

You can now watch one or all of the four versions of the video of Death of a Nightingale. Let me explain.

My play is a piece of “virtual reality”, the real world born of real experience, not the “wouldn’t it be nice if? cloud cuckoo land” some people, especially in academia, like to inhabit.

It was performed at the New End Theatre in London during March of this year and it lasted for two hours. I shall say a little more of that later on. As I didn’t think you would want to watch the video for as long as that, I asked Simon Riley of Polarity, who filmed and edited the play, to “cut the cake” four ways.

As a result, there is a three minute trailer that you can watch totally free, a fifty minute abbreviated version and two short featurettes – Tracy’s story and the music lesson – each lasting about fifteen minutes.

You can watch any or all of these if you make a contribution to Death of a Nightingale Fund held in a Community Foundation that provides holidays for children with special needs and their carers. This contribution can be as small or as large as you wish and in the UK, if you are a tax payer, you can make it with Gift Aid. As a charitable donation, the money will go further, and cost you less.

There is also the text of the play that you can download under webpage PROGRAMME, with nothing to pay.

It is shorter than the original version – and better – because its director, Tom Scott, urged me to cut its length by a third to make it more acceptable in a small theatre with not very comfortable seating. When I recovered from the shock of this advice, he showed me how to do this. He was a very talented guy.

I should explain one other thing. Tom came on the scene in January with the production scheduled for March. He was short of time to rehearse the children from the Oak Lodge School, a special school in East Finchley, who acted alongside the professional actors he cast for the play. Some lines had to be omitted from the stage performance because the pupils did not have time that they needed to rehearse them.

(Incidentally, as I have said elsewhere, the one thing children with special needs require, and the one thing a good special school can provide, is time.)

Although the play is a piece of fiction, you will feel it could be true.

Old remedies are sometimes the best. I have just seen that the best Home Remedy of 1700 was a cold douche.

“This treatment was performed by directing a stream of cold water onto the anus of a seated, naked, unsuspecting patient.”

I suppose that is what my play tries to do.
